The first product produced by Ludwig-Musser was a bass drum pedal shortly followed by a Timpani. These proved to be an overnight success, and the Ludwig-Musser Drums name became steadily known for quality and precision. Production quickly expanded to cover other instruments and drum equipment, however the Great Depression saw shifting fortunes and the company was forced to merge with the C.G Conn Company in the 30's. By 1955 Ludwig-Musser Drums was purchased back from Conn to remain independent, and in 1966 the company was able to buy the Musser Marimba Company. Ludwig-Musser Drums were most popular in the early 60's when they were endorsed by Ringo Starr of the Beatles who used to proudly display the trade name on his bassheads. John Bonham became the next major celebrity to endorse the firm. Many other endorsements for Ludwig-Musser Drums followed from such celebrity heavyweights as Eric Carr, Alex Van Halen, Nick Mason, Ian Paice, Carl Palmer, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker and Bill Ward. The company is famous for the Vistalite range of drums and kits, the Vistalite has been the trade name for the acrylic drums that are mostly transparent and very popular in rock music. Stainless steel kits were another innovative idea from Ludwig-Musser Drums, originally a custom job for Carl Palmer they concept was re-visitied in 2007 as a limited edition. In modern times Ludwig-Musser Drums have seen a resurgence in popularity, with a number of classic lines being re-introduced and selling relatively well.
