The
grandfather of heavy metal music has sadly lost his battle with stomach cancer, aged 67.
Ronnie James Dio, is most recognised for replacing Ozzy Osbourne in Black
Sabbath, and he passed away in hospital and is survived by his wife Wendy.
Ronnie James Dio also performed as a part of Rainbow, Heaven & Hell
Dio and ELF and is credited with the invention of the famous "horns", a
gesture used by heavy metal fans around the world.
Wendy Dio left the following comment on the official website. "Today my
heart is broken, Ronnie passed
away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say
their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away.
Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and
support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of
privacy to deal with this terrible loss.
Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever. Love,
Wendy."
Black Sabbath guitarist
Tony Iommi also paid tribute. "I've been in total shock. I just can't
believe he's gone. He loved his fans so much. He was a kind man
and would put himself out to help others. I'll miss you so much my dear
friend." The
Bloodstock UK metal festival have renamed their main stage the Ronnie
James Dio stage in tribute, and bands and artists around the world have
been covering Dio's songs in tribute to the performer. |
